Everything you need to know about Belize phased re-opening on August 15th, 2020

News broke on Thursday, June 25th when the Prime Minister of Belize made the official announcement that Belize’s international airport (BZE), the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) will reopen on August 15, 2020, as part of the country’s five-phase re-opening strategy for tourism. The opening of the international airport will kick-off Belize’s third phase of re-opening, allowing for further travel relaxation and open entry for chartered flights, private aviation, and limited re-opening of international leisure travel with approved hotels only.

With the reopening of PGIA, enhanced health and safety protocols have been put in place. Travelers to Belize will be comforted to know that based on proper management and containment efforts applied during the height of the pandemic, Belize was able to enjoy over 50 days of a Covid-19 free environment. Ongoing efforts will offer vacation opportunities with minimal risk of contracting Covid-19 while in Belize. In addition, with Belize having such low population density and being just a short flight away from most major US cities, the destination is well poised for post-COVID-19 travel.

All travelers to Belize will be required to adhere to health and safety measures implemented by the Government of Belize (GOB) including social distancing, hand sanitization, proper hygiene and the wearing of face masks in public spaces.

Pre-Travel Arrangements

  1. All passengers traveling to Belize will be required to download the Belize Health App and complete the required information prior to boarding the flight to Belize.  A QR code with a unique ID number will be returned to the passenger and will be used for contact tracing while in Belize.
  2. Passengers are encouraged to take a COVID PCR test within 72 hours of travel to Belize.

As a part of the pre-travel process, the passenger should start by booking their flight and hotel. Opening of hotels will be in a phased approach, and the first grouping of hotels that will be allowed to open include properties that:

  1. have achieved the Tourism Gold Standard Certificate of Recognition, and
  2. provide full service to guests.  This means that these hotels are able to provide all amenities, so as to contain the guest on the property, and minimize opportunities for guest interaction within the local community. These amenities include having transportation to offer pick-up/drop-off services from the airport; access to a restaurant on the property; have a pool or access to beachfront; and be able to provide isolated tours, limited to guests of the property only.

Passengers are therefore encouraged to book Gold Standard approved hotels.  A list of the Gold Standard approved hotels will be available at  www.travelbelize.org  in the coming weeks.

Entry Requirements

  1. Passengers that provide certification of a negative test result from a Covid-19 PCR test done within 72 hours of travel, will be allowed immediate entry into Belize via a ‘fast track’ lane.
  2. Passengers that do not provide a negative Covid-19 test, must test upon arrival in Belize, at the passenger’s expense.  A negative test result will allow entry into Belize.
  3. Passengers who test positive for Covid-19 at the Belize International Airport will be placed in mandatory quarantine for a minimum period of fourteen (14) days at the passenger’s expense.

All visitors to Belize will be required to:

At the Airport

The Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) has implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitization protocols. These include:

Departure

Residents and visitors departing from Belize will also see new enhanced health and safety measures implemented.  Some of these new measures include:

Preparation for the return of visitation via land borders and cruising are still underway and re-opening plans will be announced at a later date. The Government of Belize, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation, and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) continue to actively monitor this very fluid situation.

PGIA closed in mid-march due to the outbreak of COVID-19. To date, Belize has recorded a total of 23 cases of COVID-1 and 2 deaths. The country’s success towards this virus comes after its prompt action of closing all borders and implementing strict quarantine measures.

The Beer of Belize: Belikin Beer

The Beer of Belize, Belikin Beer is the only beer that is worth drinking when vacationing in Belize. Belikin is more than just a beer, it’s what brings us together says Belize Brewing Company.  The company has been brewing Belikin Beer since 1971 with its tagline "the beer of Belize". Therefore, Belikin Beer has become a true taste of Belize. The origin of the name “Belikin” dates back to the ancient Maya Classical Period and means “road to the east”. This could also be referring to the eastward expansion of the Mayas toward Belize. It is believed to be what the native Mayas called Belize and connects Belikin with our Belizean heritage. While the label of the beer features the Maya site of Iconic Altun Ha Maya Ruin located 31 miles north of Belize City. Belikin Beer is a classic European Continental Lager. A special blend of Canadian pilsner malt and German hops, along with a lengthy fermentation and lagering, has made our flagship brew a perfectly balanced, great-tasting full-bodied beer.

About Belikin:

Belize Brewing Company (makers of Belikin Beer) began in 1969 with Sir Barry Bowen and his son Eric Bowen. They couldn’t afford to build the brewery on their own, so they hired an international consultancy firm to produce a feasibility study, with the hope that it would provide a compelling financial story and thus allow them to borrow money from the bank. Despite the conclusion bring the opposite of what they had hoped for, Sir Bowen was undeterred and became even more determined to prove those “experts” wrong. Thus, he and Eric decided to search for potential investors. After looking far and wide, they found support in an unlikely neighbor, Honduras. In 1969, the brewery in Honduras, Cerveceria Hondureña was being managed by Berty R. Hogge. She read the feasibility study, saw the conclusion, and spoke at length with Sir Bowen about why he was pushing for a project that had little chance of success. Sir Bowen was never a salesman, but when he believed in something, he was dogmatic. Hogge recognized and appreciated his vision and drive, and despite the “experts” advice, Cerveceria Hondureña invested in the Bowens’ plan and Belize Brewing was off the ground.

Construction quickly began, with a bootstrap budget and used equipment sourced throughout the region. The brewhouse was a 43-year-old decommissioned solid copper four-vessel brewery made in 1927. It was moved and installed in Belize in 1970, and was run for another 30 years, until 2000. The only new piece of equipment purchased was a boiler, which on the day Hogge had flown in for a site visit, blew up. Back then Belize Brewing was not what it is today, but through sweat and determination, Sir Bowen forged ahead with a struggling business. Occasionally, there were thoughts that maybe the “experts” had been right, but Sir Bowen never gave up. Believing in his dream, his project, and in himself, in 1981 bought Cerveceria Hondureña’s shares.

In 1969 Sir Bowen launched Belize Brewing Company, makers of Belikin, to be sold ‘Onli Eena Belize’ (only in Belize). And through the support of its fellow Belizeans, the brewery has steadily grown. Not bad for a brewery that shouldn’t be! Not bad for a Belizean population too small for a brewery! Today, Belize Brewing celebrates fifty years of pursuing excellence. The company remains independent and family-owned, today run by Michael H. M. Bowen, an eighth-generation Belizean. We are proud to be “The Beer of Belize,” and have done well for a company the experts thought had little chance of success.  Belize Brewing Company now produces Belikin Beer, Belikin Stout, Belikin Light, Belikin Premium, Belikin Black N Tan, Belikin Sorrel Stout, Belikin Chocolate Stout, Guinness Stout, and Lighthouse Lager.

If you’re a beer lover there is no way you can leave Belize without tasting the worlds’ best beer, Belikin Beer. If you’re planning to vacation in Belize, feel free to contact the Premiere Tour Company in-country, Untame Belize Tours and Transfers. We offer UnBelizable adventures and shuttles services from the Philip Goldson International Airport to any vacation destination in the country.

Immerse Yourself in Belize Cultures

With just a population of approximately 397,628 citizens, Belize is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Belize is a ‘Melting Pot of Cultures’ for its unique blend of various influences from all over the world. Home to various ethnic groups such as the Garifuna, Mennonites, Maya, Creole, East Indian, Mestizos, Chinese, and much more. Each one of these cultures plays an amazing role in making Belize a culturally diverse destination for their unique traditions, dances, foods, music, and language.

Cultures of Belize:

1. The Garifunas

The Garifuna people arrived in Belize in 1832 after they left their native St. Vincent in the Caribbean. Their cultural contribution to Belize has been so remarkable that in 1977, November 19th was officially declared a public and bank holiday. Today, the Garifuna is one of the leading cultures in Belize for their authentic dishes, traditions, clothing, music, and dances.  Every year, the 19th of November is observed at National Garifuna Settlement Day where the Garifuna would do a reenactment of their arrival to Belize as well as host several celebrations throughout their communities in the country. You cannot come to Belize and not enjoy some of their delicious dishes like Hudut, cassava bread, darasa, bundiga or dance punta, HunguHungu, Chumba to the beat of the drums.

The Garifuna

2. The Mennonites

Migrating from the Netherlands in 1790, to Prussia, Germany, South Russia, Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the Mennonites finally settled in Belize in 1958. Under an agreement with the government, they bore all expenses of removal and settling, bringing with them capital amounting to one million dollars. They are exempted from military service; and although they pay all other taxes, they do not partake in any form of compulsory or social welfare schemes. Initially, some 3,500 Canadian Mennonites arrived in Belize, and today form communities on the upper reaches of the Belize River: Blue Creek on the Mexican border; Shipyard, Indian Creek, Richmond Hill in the Orange Walk District; Spanish Lookout and Barton Creek in the Cayo District; Little Belize in the Corozal District. Comprising 3.6 % of Belize’s population, they have made it a point to have their school, church, and financial institutions in their various communities. No matter in which region of Belize the Mennonites live and work, they are liked and respected, especially for the true Christian characteristics and helpfulness to others which they willingly display.

The Mennonites

3. The Mayas

Archeological records have dated the arrival of the Maya to what is now Belize to 2500 B.C. when they arrived in the Cuello area in the northern part of the country. Today, the descendants of that ancient people make up one of the distinct populations in Belize. Scholars divide the period of the Ancient Maya into three categories. The Classic Period is when the Maya culture reaches its zenith in the years between A.D. 250 and A.D. 1000. For unknown reasons, Maya city-states began to disintegrate after that point. Archeologists have speculated that it was due to environmental causes, plagues, or widespread civil unrest but no exact cause has ever been determined.

Today, there are three distinct groups of Maya living in Belize. In the northern districts of Corozal and Orange Walk lives a population known as the Yucatec Maya who originally migrated from neighboring Mexico. In the southern Toledo District of Belize live the Mopan Maya who originally migrated from the San Luis area of the Peten region in neighboring Guatemala. There is also a branch of the Mopan Maya clustered around the village of San Jose Succotz formed of a mixture of Maya from Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants. Also located in the southern Toledo District is the Kekchi Maya who migrated from San Pedro Corcha in Guatemala.

The Mayas

4. The Creole

The Belizean Creole or Kriol are Creole descendants of English log cutters and Black African slaves who were brought primarily from Jamaica to cut down mahogany trees. Many settlers would often marry or engage in sexual relations with Black African women, creating this new ethnic group. Today, identifying a Creole may confuse some; a blonde, blue-eyed Creole is not an uncommon sight as the term also denotes a culture that distinguishes more than physical appearance.

The Creole

5. The East Indians

Some years after slavery was abolished, a group of Hindus from India came to Belize by way of Jamaica. They had entered Jamaica as part of an indentureship program that the British arranged to provide labor for various industries in the Caribbean after slavery was abolished. After these people had finished five years of indentureship, they were free to move to any territory in the West Indies to work. In Belize, the Hindus first settled in the Corozal District where they formed a community they called Calcutta and worked for the Mestizo and British sugar interests.

East Indians were believed to be better for lighter agricultural work than Africans or Garinagu. This racial stereotype meant that they were absorbed mainly by the British and Mestizo Sugar Estates in northern Belize as well as the twelve Confederate sugar estates in the south of the country. A wave of Hindus also arrived directly from India in the 1920s.

The East Indians

6. The Mestizos

Northern Belize is home to the largest Mestizo population in Belize. The term "Mestizo" refers to individuals of mixed Spanish and Yucatan Mayan descent whose primary language is Spanish and religion Catholic. Because of the large Mestizo population within Orange Walk and Corozal, northern Belize demographically resembles Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula more than any Belizean region. Mestizos originally landed within the borders of modern-day Belize after fleeing the Guerra de las Castas in the Yucatan in 1848. When the conflict ended, many refugees remained and settled along the River Hondo on Belize's northern border. More recently, immigrants from Guatemala and El Salvador have contributed to the Spanish community in the north and west of Belize. Their presence over the years has established the Spanish language as an integral part of daily life within households and schools throughout the country.

The Mestizos

7. The Chinese

The first Chinese in Belize arrived as indentured laborers from the Amoy region in southeastern China in 1865.  These immigrants were never agriculturally oriented and many died or went to live with the Santa Cruz Maya between the time they arrived in Belize and 1891.  The next migration of Chinese came from Livingston, Guatemala.  The subsequent wave of Chinese immigration was more permanent with several new families making Belize their home.

After Independence, citizens of Taiwan have immigrated to Belize.  Mainland Chinese have also continued to make Belize their homes. Another Asian group that has contributed to Belize is a small group from Korea who have made attempts at manufacturing in the country.  Asians have contributed much to the development of commerce in Belize.
