Dangriga is a small, lively town that goes by the nickname the “Culture Capital of Belize.” Enjoy music, art galleries, dancing, authentic dining, and more in this small gem of a town.
Dangriga is the heart of Belize’s Afro-Caribbean Garifuna culture. Visit the Gulisi museum that is dedicated to the Garifuna’s history in Belize. Take classes in Garifuna cooking and dancing. Dangriga is also close to several Maya communities. While you’re here, learn how the modern Maya use ancient techniques to make unique products like Maya chocolate.
From Dangriga, it’s an easy trip to the Belize Barrier Reef. It’s the perfect launching spot for your scuba diving, fishing, sea kayaking, and snorkeling expeditions. Traveling through the Caribbean Sea takes you through unspoiled cayes and atolls where wildlife and sea life are abundant.
Just south of Dangriga is the small Garifuna fishing village of Hopkins. You’ll find a true beach destination in this easygoing community. Enjoy 12 miles of unspoiled, white-sand beaches. Relax in the sun with an ice-cold Belikin or a tropical drink made with local rum.
Hopkins is a great starting point for two of Belize’s best wildlife preserves. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve is the world’s first jaguar sanctuary. It offers acres of waterfalls, hiking trails, natural pools, and incredible views. The Mayflower Bocawina National Park is another amazing preserve that is home to several species of wild cat, bats, and other local wildlife. Both preserves are less than an hour’s drive from Hopkins.
